ASUS Canada RMA review.

Okay so I just got my G51jx back from the RMA centre in Markham, ON, Canada.

Here's a quick write up of my experience.

Problems:

My LCD had 4 bleached white dots only visible on a white background on it that were getting progressively worse (more were showing up since the purchase).

The headphone jack got stuck (speakers didnt work) cause they were detected as always plugged in.

RMA:

Dropped off at the depot Monday morning (Apr. 18th). Told the guy at the desk about the screen problem and showed him the spots. He marked the areas with stickers. Also informed him about the audio jack.

Called Tuesday afternoon to check status (Apr. 19th). It was already in the final testing phase he said. It should be done by the next morning.

Called Today morning (Apr. 20th). They said it was ready for pick up and everything was clear. Went there and picked up.

Results:

They gave me a report on what was replaced. They replaced the LCD and audio board, checked it out on the spot. No more white dots and speakers were working again. Perfect . Walked out a happy customer.

I went in there expecting the worst, hearing about all the horror stories about screwups. I was expecting a screen replacement but them giving me the wrong resolution screen. They didn't. It was a brand new 1080p LCD screen (AUO made). No more annoying white dots = yay.

So a pretty good experience for my first RMA. The Canada facility is on top of things it seems.

A 2 night turnaround time is very good IMO. I also hear they do same day service for stuff like hard drives or keyboard problems.

Reply 1 : ASUS Canada RMA review.

Asus Canada repair facility has been known to be top-notch for a while. Glad to hear their quality of service hasn't declined.

N53SV: Blu Ray Drive + Blank DVD issue

Hey all

I've just been backing up a load of data onto DVD's and an issue has come up where my Blu Ray drive on the ASUS N53SV can no longer "read" them as being blank dvd's.

The discs I burnt earlier can still be read with the data on them, but blank DVD's just give me an error message about them not being formatted

I've tried with about 8 DVD's to make sure, of which there are 3 different brands - Verbatim DVD +R's, Memorex -R's and some crappy Smartbuy DVD-R's.

I've googled a bit but couldn't find any posts mentioning this....

I'm wondering whether the drive is dead due to the whole Sandy Bridge thing but then again it can still read discs with data on it so I'm confused

Any ideas?

Thanks very much for your help in advance!

If not then it could be just a bad drive.

messed up windows install (CF28)

aight, so i've exhausted all the options my sleep deprived brain could think of and i'm still screwed.

i dont have a cd rom drive for my toughbook cf28 but i figured i'd run the bootdisk install (i386 folder to hdd, boot with bootdisk and start winnt.exe) done it so many times that i've lost count.

now here's the thing. the files are copied and everything, but when the gui install part i supposed to start, all i get is s blinking cursor. and i have no bloody clue how to get it running.

any ideas?

EDIT: i give up... unless someone can think of something else, this machine will be scrapped. i get the bloody operating system not found error whatever the hell i do...

Reply 1 : messed up windows install (CF28)

Try making the HDD bootable first. In the olden days we used sys.com. Made the HDD bootable in the new OS before I actually installed it. What version of Windows are you trying to install?

Reply 2 : messed up windows install (CF28)

its Windows XP SP3. but i have five other discs with different version i can try.

my problem is this. during the first stage of the install, the computer copies files to the hdd. then it reboots and runs the files from the hdd. shouldn't the drive be bootable then? cause this is the first time its not bootable. at least what i've seen.

thrid this as well: Installing XP on Old PC!

still a nogo

EDIT: gotta redo everything. sys.com doesnt work cause dos doesnt support NTFS. trying fat32 atm

EDIT2: sys.com did nothing at all. (fat32)

EDIT3: possible success. however smartdrv.exe crashed so it'll take approx 4 hours until i know if it worked or not

I have had this very problem before. I can not remember the exact solution at the moment. How sure are you that the HDD is good? I seem to think it was a HDD error. I believe I repartitioned the drive and did a custom partition. Not using the first gig or so of the drive. It seems to me my most recent occurrence of the flashing cursor, non boot was when I reformatted an OEM Mac drive for Windows in a Toughbook. I made the 40g drive a 38g drive and it worked. Something was written in the boot sector that Windows refused to erase. It was a new drive so I doubt that it had a bad spot, but you never know.

Reply 4 : messed up windows install (CF28)

i'll try hat partition trick momentarily.

regarding he harddrive, i've tired two 120gb seagate drives, two 100gb fujitsu drives and a 20gb IBM travelstar. same issue on all of them. and all work splendidly in other machines.

the drives are from two different hp pavilion dv8000 notebooks and the travelstar is a replacement drive from my powerbook pismo, i uhm... liberated.

Reply 5 : messed up windows install (CF28)

I recall that there is a program that will make a usb bootable, even in PC's that don't support booting off of usb such as the CF-28. I can't remember what it's called though.

plop boot manager? cause i'm trying that out atm

i managed to get it running now. i ran fdisk BEFORE i started winnt.exe. and now i'm at the gui install stage. problem solved

EDIT: Writing this on the toughbook. wlan is ty though. sitting 5 meters from the access point and i get barely 20% signal...

Your problem is simple: you are trying to read from an NTFS formatted partition before Windows has installed the drivers for NTFS support.

When you do a remote deployment install (that's what the i386 install is meant for) you have to format the HD as FAT32 and leave it as FAT 32 UNTIL THE INSTALL IS COMPLETE.

Once you've completed the install and the chipset drivers (hence support for NTFS) are installed, THEN you can convert the filesystem to NTFS at the command prompt using convert.exe :

How to Use Convert.exe to Convert a Partition to the NTFS File System

As for the poor WiFi signal, it's prolly because your antennas are inside a magnesium housing; there are only a few areas where you can install the flag antennas in a CF-28 and have them work. Otherwise, you can do the WiFi antenna hack shown here:

mate, i've done this dozens of times on the most obscure of computers. and this is the first time it bugged out on me like this. although, your explanation has merit and makes a lot of sense.

yeah, well basically i took the wifi antenna of a dead zepto 6615 and taped it into the case itself with electrical tape. it's far from optimal, but it'll do until i get the parts for it. temporary solution at best.

However, there was one thing i was wondering. i've got the drivers and all installed but the colors have gone to hell. i've got a blue wallpaper (same as on my asus) and the bloody thing is green. is this a side effect of the touchscreen panel or is something broken?

the settings are correct. i have yet to try out via VGA however.

DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

To whom considering buying DELL's laptop:

I am writing this post to share my experience with DELL technical support.

I bought a Latitude E6500 from dell 3 months ago, but for the past month, I have been dealing with technical support and sent my laptop back 3 times.

This is my first time using Dell's Laptop, after using Thinkpad for more than 10 years I decided to give DELL a try. However the technical support is the worst one in my life ever. I believe somebody works in DELL exchange my machine. I got a very BAD BAD screen, and lost my Windows 7 serial number sticker, I cannot re-install windows 7.

Here are the sequences of my experience with the technical support:

1. My battery was dead after about 2 monthes of use, won't charge.

2. I called technical support for a new battery

3. The motherboard was electronic shocked after I use the new battery from DELL

4. I sent the laptop back to DELL to replace the motherboard.

5. I recieved the laptop with new motherboard, but the fingerprint censor was damaged.

6. I sent the laptop back to DELL again to fix fingerprint.

7. THE WORST PART: I got the laptop back and a letter. The letter says there were nothing done with my laptop, the fingerprint is still not working. But I found out my screen was exchanged. My old screen was bright and had no dead pixels, but the new one is dark and has A LOOOOOOOOOOOOT of dead pixels. These are even two big dead pixel spots, I can't count how many dead pixels in those spots. My Windows 7 serial number sticker lost as well. It seems somebody works in DELL exchanged my laptop.

8. I sent the laptop back to DELL again.

I don't know when the DELL's technical support would END.............

Reply 1 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

I am sorry you've had a poor experience but I suppose that happens with everything. Some people have nothing but good experience and others not so much.

I have owned in excess of 10 dell units over the years. All replaced when I was able to upgrade. The majority of my units have not had any issues at all and the ones that did, dell responded quickly to repair them. I typically have on-site repair but I did have to send in one of my units. The first time, they sent it back because they could not find the issue I had discussed with my screen. The 2nd time, I sent them pictures with the unit showing the issue, by that time I also had a dvd drive that was not functioning properly. I got the unit back with a new lcd, new dvd drive, and new palm rest.

Dell uses 3rd party repair sites in most cases to fix their units so it may be that the location they have you sending your notebook isn't the best. Perhaps if Dell has enough complaints from that company then they will give the contract to someone else.

At any rate, good luck with getting your issue resolved.

Reply 2 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

I've also had a lot Dell notebook systems through the last ten years. If it's possible I take always In Home Service warranty and sometimes next business day. This way I can observe the tech like a hawk about his activities.

I think because of all the trouble you're going through, you have to explain and demand Dell a replacement system for all this. This rig has been so much crippled by mala fide service techs, you lost confidence in Dell's technical support. So it's up to them to solve this issue.

Good luck.

Reply 3 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

After about three major system repairs I start asking them to replace the system with a non-outlet machine. Sad that I've done that a few times and gotten my way each time.

That being said I've never had a problem with their technical support staff on the phone. It is just the people that fix the laptops I have problems with.

Yes, this time DELL did say they will send my machine to another depot. I don't know if that means they will use non-outlet machine to replace.

i had a Dell XPS with them, the support was actually fast, i gave them a call and they are right in front of my doorstep the next day. (i'm still under warranty period)

my motherboard was overheating. it has been replaced once by Dell technicians but the problem stil persist

what i'm unhappy was that they couldn't solve my problems, and told me that i have to change the motherboard every few months or so. (it means $$$ to them)

sigh

now i'm planning to get rid of my XPS, and maybe go for a Mac

Reply 7 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

What type of warranty do you have? If it is the basic mail-in warranty, consider upgrading to next-business-day on-site service. Who knows what happens when you mail it in, I would never do that.

As for the XPS issue, which model is it? It sounds like the Nvidia GPU issue, in which case it's not Dell's fault and there's also no fix.

Reply 8 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

Man, I wish you luck. And all, please wish me luck to as I am in limbo right now also!

AHHH, DARN YOU DELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reply 9 : DELL: WORST WOORST WOOORST Technical Support EVEEEEEEEEEEEER

So, if you are sending it to the depot, that isn't the same thing as replacing the unit. The depot will go through the system and repair what issues they find with it.

If you have issues once it get back, I would suggest asking for an exchange.

If needed, you can submit an escalation here: https://support.dell.com/support/top...=us&l=en&s=gen

It's CFast -- a SATA-based CompactFlash.

Potentially nice addition because CFast cards could reach 300MB/s transfers.

Envy 15 high pitched sounds

I get an almost constant high-pitched noise coming from what sounds like the left side of the Envy15. The sound is probably in the 16khz range, probably goes undetected by a lot people but I always pick up on it. I've noticed the sound is interupted when I scroll a webpage so I thought it was crappy power regulation for the display or something. However, when same effect is there when using an external monitor and the laptop lid closed.

I've heard this is a "common" problem for other users. Does anyone know what the source of the sound is?

Reply 1 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

Also, the (gpu?) fan on the right side of the laptop seems to run constantly at an audible level. Not loud but more noticeable than the previous i5 420m envy15 I returned (the 420m was almost silent). Is this normal? The current 530m seems twice as warm as the 420m when feeling the case.

I get that noise on the right side coming from the front opening which is the hard disk. Note that I have an SSD. Im not sure that the noise was there before I replaced the hard rive with the SSD. Again, the problem could be unrelated to the SSD but its annoying very much.

Reply 4 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

weird, i had a high frequency squeal from the hard drive but its gone now that i went to SSD.

Reply 5 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

im really trying my best to avoid sending back for repair given the horror stories of how they come back.

Reply 6 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

I have this too so I opened the computer up to see where it was coming from but I could not locate it. I took the hdd out to make sure that wasn't the source.

Reply 7 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

There is a BIOS CPU power saving feature that causes a high pitched noise to be emitted from the CPU itself. Happens even in desktops. Google for specifics but I fixed mine on a desktop by turning off the feature.

But I'm only 75% sure that your issue is even related to this.

Reply 8 : Envy 15 high pitched sounds

Just played around in BIOS saw no option for cpu power saving or anything even remotely related

[VPC-Z] QPI Link frequency ?

Hi,

I have got a VPC-Z11 with a i7 620M with advanced bios.

A moment ago, I had try some stuff with this :

And then CPU-Z showed that :

I have used my computer many time with that last setting (QPI 6.4 GT) without any problem. I didn't pay attention much to that frequency later

I can't do any screenshot anymore, because the QPI Link doesn't get anymore higher than 2400 Mhz

Whatever I try, like 5.866 GT or 6.400 GT it's stuck to 2400 Mhz.

Except if I try 3.200 GT it get back to 1600 Mhz.

I wonder if this is normal.

What is your QPI Link frequency reported in CPU-Z ?

Reply 1 : [VPC-Z] QPI Link frequency ?

Isn't qpi link DDR? If so then it makes sense that it reports half speed for everything. 4800=2400. Sounds to me like your cpu doesn't support anything above the stock spec which is 4800/2400. What are you looking to gain exactly?

I'd leave it set to auto, and frankly I'd stop screwing around with it.

Reply 2 : [VPC-Z] QPI Link frequency ?

Yeah looks like it does not support anything higher than 4.800 GT

But it reached once 3200 for 6.400 GT.

What do I expect ? some slight more performance, I've tried few benchmarks at 1600Mhz/3.200 GT , it was about 10% lower than normal settings in certain conditions.

Ya AUTO that exactly what I do, mister pseudo-moral giver.

The hardware setup sounds fine but configuration would tax most network folk. Not all but most.

For example some folk I run into have ideas they can't let go of such as "hide the SSID" which is showing signs of troubles such as hard to connect to or dropped connections.

This is just ONE setting that creates trouble and there are at least a dozen more.

A tutorial does not fit on this page.

Tell the network to supply the cloud site and password for managing the Meraki's and then find new help.
Bob

Reply 4 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

First thing when your network guy decides to help you is get a network drawing of each floor and how the floors connect. Generally these are taped to the wall in each closet so they are always available when there are problems.

Just guessing I would say that the only your first floor is working and floor 2 is just getting enough signal to connect. A common design would run cable from each floor closet to the main floor. With this design the only way for all the floors to go down would be if the switch/router they plug into was broken. A cheaper way is to plug floors 1-2-3-4-5. With this design if any unit fails everything above it also fails.

If you are lucky someone unplugged a switch from the power in your first floor. If all the equipment is on and the lights on the cable look correct you are stuck until you can find out what is messed up in the software configuration.

The AP units main function is to convert the wireless signal from the PC to ethernet cable. There are security function but they are best looked at as a wireless ethernet cable to the router/switch in the closets.

Since they are stupid the AP will connect to the PC via wireless but it just blindly sends data down the ethernet cable even if the stuff on the other end cannot see the internet. So the user will get a wireless connection but nothing else.

Reply 5 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

im pretty sure the wireless routers on the 2nd/4th floors are wired to the switch, which would be the best way for anyone network tech to connect it..

so it must be the software setting..

what does the Meraki thigns do? do they act as antennas to extend the wireless range from the wireless routers int he housekeeping closet?

if so, anyone familiar with setting it up can give some insight as to what settings to change or have on

Reply 6 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

The Meraki is going to be problematic. Here's why. It's configured from the web or more precisely "the cloud." It is not configured like your normal wifi WAP or router.

If you researched this you would find that your network person will have to surrender the web link and logins to configure the Merakis.

I wonder if you knew that.
Bob

Reply 7 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

he has given the username and password for the Meraki website, but i do not know what options to change or set

Reply 8 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

Sorry but whoever he is, may want to take time to call Meraki and ask for suggestions to improve their product performance. While I have my preferences I am not this system's designer and could break the system too easily given the details so far.

Meraki is the next call.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/7420/correcty.png

would this be the correct way to setup the network..
I will only have the switch and AP on the 2nd/4th floor. if the signal is weak on the other floors, i would have to add another set of switch/AP..

Reply 10 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

For years the setup has been "run ethernet floor to floor and put WAPs on each floor."

It's such a simple plan but in your system above you have these Merakis which are pretty nice but there settings are unknown and apparently you can't look at them.

Reply 11 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

I have access to the Meraki site and can make changes.

There are currently 4 meraki AP units, 2 on 2nd floor and 2 on 4th floor. I dont know where out current tech get these from, but if i do get more APs, i would like to keep them the same, i think it would be less of a headache.

we dont usually get more then 30-35 clients connecting at once, so i doubt we would need on each floor.

this is a small-medium size hotel, so trying to keep cost down is a main priority, we dont really need the exspensive gear.

Reply 12 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

I would go back and test each location yourself.

From your description I would guess that you are getting the wireless connection to your AP but you are not getting IP connectivity back to the router.

You need to start to eliminate what is causing your problem. I would first attach to switch on each floor even if that means you unplug a AP for a short time. This will at least tell you if you need to be looking at the AP or the router/switches.

Now if your problem is that it all works but is "slow" that is a much more difficult problem.

Such doubt is where I find the most trouble. That is, the formula is well known but you continue to encounter folk that doubt it.

Hi, I work at Meraki and would like to help out. The Meraki units are wireless access points that users connect to. The Meraki APs are configured through our web-based application. It sounds like you've got a mix of equipment, so from your description it's not clear exactly where the problem lies. (For example, both the Meraki and the Linksys are wireless access points - which one are users connecting to?) Please contact our support team (support@meraki.com) and we can help sort this out. If you had a professional set up your network, you can ask them to contact us as well.

The clues are here -> "switch and AP on the 2nd/4th floor. if the signal is weak on the other floors"

If you think it over, this is the typical setup where they thought they could skip floors.
Bob

Reply 16 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

if i turned off the DHCP on the upper floors, this would eliminate most of the problems, or do i absolutely need switches?

im trying to keep cost down if i dont really need new gear

Reply 17 : Anyone Network Techs.. need help

The design we used was one DHCP server and many WAPs.

I think you need to have someone come in and give some basic one on one courses in networking. Then you can avoid shuting down your network.

le46c750 DLNA specs

What are the supported formats and bit rates for the samsung le46c750 when video is streamed via dlna

Reply 1 : le46c750 DLNA specs

The manual. DO NOT GET CONFUSED by what is listed for USB play.

In short, go with what works. It's a very small subset of any encoding that works on PCs, Xbox and PS3. So small that most say forget it or install some TRANSCODING DLNA SERVER (see google)

HDMI Connection on HP 8530w

Hi All,

I am using HP EliteBook 8530w laptop with NVIDIA FX770 integrated.

The problem is that after connecting HDMI cable to LG LE5500 TV, the TV recognized bu the laotop but switching to the TV shows no pictutre.

The TV shows "No Signal" sign and a black screen.

Can you suggest what could be the problem ?

Michael

Reply 1 : HDMI Connection on HP 8530w

-try another HDMI cable

-update your video driver

-try hooking up to a monitor via HDMI port with that same cable

I think I had to change some video settings in my 8510W when I was setting it up for use on the TV. Try configuring the video out in the Nvidia software.

Reply 2 : HDMI Connection on HP 8530w

It could also be your motherboard is faulty. I have one here that does the exact same thing. I've tried new known good GPU card but that does the same thing. ie. my other 8530w's work fine with the same HDD GPU card and cable etc swapped in. its a shame because it is a genuine quadcore motherboard and everything else works on it, just not HDMI. Might have to try and bake it lol.

Poor E4310 Battery Life

I have a company supplied E4310, 128GB SSD, extended battery, Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit with 4GB of RAM. To say I am disappointed with the battery life would be a big understatement. On the maximum power saving profile I get just about 2 hours of battery life with minimal screen brightness.

I had an E4300 at my last company and it would regularly get 4+ hours with the same type of battery.

I've tried all the power settings/profiles I can think of, with no appreciable difference in battery life.

Any ideas what the issue could be? It's driving me crazy. I know it should be able to to better, but I can't figure out what the problem is.

Thanks in advance

Perhaps your IT guy took your new battery and gave it to the boss, and gave you an aging battery.

You could try recalibrating it... run it down in Windows, run it down some more in the BIOS, and then recharge it.

You could send it back if they agree it should last longer.

Maybe your battery is shot? Try it with a new battery?

Reply 3 : Poor E4310 Battery Life

First figure out if the battery has lost capacity or whether something is guzzling the power even in power saving mode.

Run HWiNFO32. On the main page under Smart Battery you can see Designed Capacity, Fully Charged Capacity and Wear Level and then, when running on battery, select Sensors and it will show the power drain (as negative charging). Under light usage you should be looking for a power drain of less than about 12W (12,000mW).

I have an E4310 and I get 4-5 hours in power saving mode, it ranges based on screen brightness and wireless usage.

Reply 5 : Poor E4310 Battery Life

Thanks for all the suggestions. E4310 is 4 months old, battery shows 4.8% wear. 53.28Wh capacity. I'm showing an average of about 12W on battery. I'll keep an eye on it, I also have another battery I can try.

John - thanks for the recontamination on HwInfor32, that's a neat program!

Thanks for this extra info. The battery looks quite healthy although sometimes the capacity can disappear when the battery approaches empty (and you can go from 25% remaining to 5% in a few minutes).

I suspect that there are occasions when something is loading the CPU in which case the power consumption will shoot up. One possible culprit is animated Flash content in the web browser (I use Firefox with Flashblock to control this). Look at CPU usage on the Processes tab in Task Manager to see what is hitting the CPU.

Power4Gear install problem on U31JG running Windows 7 64-bit

I've been trying to install the latest version of Power4Gear on my U31JG-RX122V running a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, but the installer hangs on the empty command line window that opens during the install. The command line window is opened by the following file:

C:Program FilesP4GP4GUpdate.GadgetP4GUpdateInstaller_x64.exe

Pressing ctrl+c or closing the cmd window aborts the installation of the entire program. I've tried leaving it running for about an hour without results. Does anyone know what is causing this and how it can be fixed?

My U31JG has the following hardware specifications:

Intel Core i5 480M / 2.66 GHz

Mobile Intel HM55 Express

Intel HD Graphics

NVIDIA GeForce GT 415M

Software specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit w/ service pack 1

Intel HD Graphics driver 8.15.10.2302

nVidia GeForce driver 267.76

Power4Gear version I'm trying to install: V1.1.41

The reason I want to install P4G is specifically for the ability to control the activation of the dedicated nVidia graphics card, this for battery saving purposes. Currently, with all drivers installed and up to date, it seems to either automatically change between the integrated Intel and the dedicated nVidia graphics card without any kind of feedback, or simply not change at all and constantly run on the dedicated nVidia card. If anyone knows of a good way to achieve this control without P4G then do tell.

Thanks

You have to install the ATK utility first. I had the same problem after a clean install of Windows.

X10 Plus, how to remap the keyboard???

Installed windows 7 LITE. Works great, BUT, how the hec do I remap the special symbols on the keyboard? JOHN HELP! (John has helped a lot of people on here regarding these laptops, amongst others) Seriously, Samsung put the "@" symbol NOT on the number 2 key. Very disturbing... Anyways, please, if anyone knows of a Samsung program that can accomplish this task, advise me. Otherwise I'll look in to a generic keyboard symbol mapper, remapper.

thanks in advance,

jake

EDIT: I can and will put XP back on there if that's what gets the keys back to where they're supposed to be.

Reply 1 : X10 Plus, how to remap the keyboard???

I wonder whether the layout of your keyboard is for a different language than is set under Windows' regional settings.

What characters comes on the screen when you press (i) Shift + 2; and (ii) Shift + 3?

Inspiron 1501 Unique Battery/Power Issue

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 that is about 2.5 years old. For about 6 months I've been having a batter/power issue. When I restart my computer it is quite sluggish. Typed letters are slow to appear, certain programs are very slow, the power meter doesn't recognize the battery, etc.

The weird thing is that if I unplug the AC adapter and allow the battery to drain to the point (about 7%) where the pop up text alerts me to plug in my computer before it shuts down, it then works great. After the message pops up, function is great, but the battery will not charge past 9%.

I'd like to have the best of both worlds with a laptop that works and has a full battery so I can travel with it. Any suggestions? I called Dell about the issue a few months ago and they suggested the issue may be the AC adapter and sent me a new one, but the problem remains. I've updated BIOS recently as well.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Reply 1 : Inspiron 1501 Unique Battery/Power Issue

Fortunately battery only have a year warranty you will need to purchase a new battery for the system.

Reply 2 : Inspiron 1501 Unique Battery/Power Issue

My friend has this issue too. Only she bought a new battery AND adapter and it doesn't work right! Say's it has a hard time determining what the adapter is! Like a fool I said I would look @ it! Back of system says it needs a "PA-12" adapter but can't find one to buy! Also it doesn't say if it is 90w or 65w. Currently she has a 65w and the connector doesn't seem to fit really well.ANY suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

Call Dell up and see what they want to exchange.

If you didn't get the parts from dell, re-consider that and if you wonder why they lock out non-maker batteries and chargers research the old exploding battery problems and the lawsuits.

Tearing down my HP Compaq F730US (Pictures)

My poor F730US suffered a slow painful death, first the wifi card blew up and then it turned into a total piece of crap the original hdd died and then it died.

I shot everything hand held with my dSLR using a ceiling bounce to flash the shots and that is why the exposures tend to be inconsistent. Edited everything minimally. Shots are in reverse order because of the way photobucket generates links.

MOST PARTS ARE AVAILABLE INCLUDING THE BATTERY AND CHARGER IF YOU WANT EM LET ME KNOW

It failed just as hard as the HP with the same motherboard. Note the solder points for the GPU and vRam btw. Not sure what other models it was used in but the HP I wanted had exactly the same specs minus a card reader and i think one other thing.

It was cheap lol.
