Problem : Channels are blurry and there's no sound
I've read troubleshooting guide, contacted the cable provider and said we need channel converters because NTSC/PAL formats are not supported by the TV... They suggested using channel converters.

thing is, if we'd use channel converters, we won't be able to enjoy the TV's full functionality.

Are there any available software upgrades? coz i'm reluctant to use channel converters.

Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Sony MDR-V600 Headphones Malfuntioning

Righty, well as of this morning my headphones have been playing up; It's gone completely silent in one ear. There are no obvious signs of phsical trauma, and i was using them last night with no problems whatsoever, no crackling or static etc, and all i did was stick them on the shelf, no bending or throwing or dropping or whatever. It is perfectly silent, no fuzzy noises or quiet music if i wiggle the wires or anything. I've tried them with differend audio devices, so it's not the jack on my mp3. I just wantto know if a) anyone knows what the problem is and b) what can be done about it, whether i have a chance at repairing them myself, or can hire someone, or if they're totally dead. It's such a sudden fault - i looked into it and the best i can get is that theyve possibly shorted out? Hoping not, theyre pricey! Any help whatsoever will be really appreciated <3

Gx660r 474uk, buy it now?

I'm looking for a good rig for under a 1000. This is the i5 460m model. Which has great reviews and is around 900.

I've looked at the gt680 but at 1600, thats way to much.

Is it worth getting this older rig?

Any help would be great.

Setup of a 1018 netbook

Page 14 of the Dell guide states an Internet connection is optional and page 9 says a procedure screen will include setting up of an Internet connection. Warning is given that interruption may render the computer unusable. I would like to know if avoiding an internet connection can be done without danger to the operating system.

lED instument replacement bulbs

I've read all the archived threads on how to replace the 194 bulbs on my kids 2000 Corolla (to which I am greatful) Great threads by the way. Anyway, can someone tell me if they've preplaced the original with LED lights on their instument cluster? If I go to superbrightled.com, I'm really unsure what type to get ( in terms of light coverage). Thanks

Reply 1 : lED instument replacement bulbs

Unless things have changed, the problems with LEDs is that they don't dim. So you either get off or full brightness on your cluster.

Reply 2 : lED instument replacement bulbs

I bought some blue led's form ebay and they dim, and work great. I will try to find the seller. Coverage wise, they really illuminate the whole cluster

Reply 3 : lED instument replacement bulbs

tuukka87, that would be great if you could find the seller on ebay. I would want the lights to dim and not be on 100% full bright all the time. (BTW, blue is the color we're after)

Reply 4 : lED instument replacement bulbs

superbrightleds..id avoid. i dont know if you saw my old thread, but i bought quite a few LEDs from them, almost all of which are now dead or flickering. I did the hvac, i think they were 70's, and those were the first to die.

I dont know if thats an issue with high power LEDs, but i wouldve hoped theyd last a little longer than a few months. and its not like im in crazy climate.

2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

Hey,

Have any of you seen a review, whitepaper, guide, or authoritative blog post on the drive options for the X220, T420, T520, W520, etc.?

We are looking to understand about the new microSSD drives and their use, definitive bay sizes, and supported and tested SATA speeds.

For instance, can you have three SSD drives in the T420? It appears the answer is yes. Can the microSSD be used as a boot drive?

What is the height of the primary drive bay in the X220? What about the T420?

Are the microSSD slots, primary drive bay, and ultrabay all SATA III and therefore 6GB speed interfaces?

None of the reviews I've seen have touched on this area.

Thanks

Reply 1 : 2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

-mSATA ssd's are full size pcie cards.

-They can be used as boot drives (that's the desired config in a X220).

-They've been tested.

-I don't see why you couldn't have three ssd's in the T420.

-Primary drive bay in the X220 is 7mm tall, 9.5mm in the T420. User bsoft has pointed out that the X25-M is a 7mm drive once the spacer is removed.

-The 310-series ssd's are SATA II according to the review. Can't speak for any of the motherboard interfaces, but I'd think at least the full size drive bays are SATA III considering where the ssd market is now.

Right, although I should add that the T420s is 7mm like the X220. So if you want a 9mm drive in the T420s, your only option is to put it in the UltraBay with the SATA adapter (instead of a battery or optical drive).

7mm hard drives are pretty easy to find and they aren't really any more expensive or slower than the 9mm versions. The only downside is that the largest 7mm disks are 320/500GB (7200/5400rpm) vs. 750GB for 9mm disks. So if you need a ton of storage the X220 isn't a great option and the T420s is only a good option if you don't mind losing the bay battery/optical drive.

7mm SSDs on the other hand are a problem. Other than the Intel X25-M G2 there aren't a lot of options here. There's the X25-M G2 in 80GB and 160GB, which is a great drive but not the fastest thing on the market any more. It's also easy to get. Lenovo also has a 128GB SSD option, which is probably Samsung, but it might be an OEM-only part which could rule it out.

1.8" SSDs might also be an option, but I'm not aware of any adapters that are 7mm currently.

I'm planning on re-using my X25-M G2 160GB when I get a T420s or an X220 (I haven't decided which yet).

Reply 3 : 2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

Thanks for the info on the Intel 310 series but I was already aware of that. I'm up to speed on the storage device speeds and interfaces. The interface speeds in the notebook is an entirely different ballgame as we learned with the T61p.

Reply 4 : 2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

Would Newegg.com - Intel 310 Series (Soda Creek) SSDMAEMC080G2C1 mSATA 80GB mSATA (mini PCIe form factor) MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - SSD work in a t420s or w520 as a boot drive?

Is Lenovo blocking drives that aren't purchased from them?

Reply 5 : 2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

I've asked this question, but we won't know until someone tries.

Reply 6 : 2011 ThinkPad drive options and speed

In one of the threads it was said the X220 7mm drive has a spacer on it so as to occupy a 9.5mm bay, ie: the bay itself can take a 9.5mm drive.

I've no idea one way or the other. Maybe because it's late and I've not thought this through clearly, but if I look at my X200t and the pics from the X220 tabook, it looks like the drive cover on my X200t is a bit taller than the drive cover on the X220.

DLNA and Netflix

I just bought a HT-C6930W home theater and so far I love it but have a few questions.

1. I'm running a Linksys Media Hub that's running Twonky media server. When connecting via DLNA it doesn't let me fast forward, rewind or pause. I get an error that its not available? What is the use of DLNA if I can't control the server? I don't want to have a computer running just to watch my movies. Are these features going to be considered in future firmware releases?

2. Netflix, why is it I cannot browse the netflix library? It only lets me see what's in my instant queue. I also run a PS3 in another room and it lets me browse all kinds of movies and shows. Is this option soon to be available?

Thanks

Reply 1 : DLNA and Netflix

Anonymous,

DLNA doesn't guarantee FF>> or REW>> features, and while it's not supported on all devices, it may vary by file type, too.

As for the Netflix App, they may offer an update, and some models have seen that reflected recently. As it stands, it's the interface that they've chosen for the player. You might try updating the firmware for the Blu-Ray/HT system to see if Netflix provides an update after the latest firmware is applied.

If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure if or when the option would be available. Netflix would be able to speak on that, and can be reached at 866-716-00414.

--HDTech

Reply 2 : DLNA and Netflix

Contacted Netflix. They had me go through a bunch of attempts to get the movie library to come up and after everything failed I was told that the problem had to be the latest firmware upgrade. They are going to disconnect my device and after 8 hours I can reconnect and then try again. The support rep stated that I should be able to browse all the netflix library.

As for DLNA, it shouldn't be that difficult to add it to a next firmware upgrade. You really have a excellent product with AllShare, don't let it go to waste but not taking it to its highest potential. AllShare it the reason I have 3 AllShare devices in my home but they are right on the edge on being perfect. I also have another 3 Samsung TV's and a Samsung Fridge.

HELP - Vaio Black Screen!

Hi... Im using a donated Sony Vaio VGN-A517S for my work

About a month ago, the screen just went black after the VAIO image came out but I can hear Win XP running and even Avast updated online!!! Ive used an external monitor and the same problem exists!

Some say its the bulb or inverter - Ive even followed a suggestion of unplugging the power cord from the laptop, take out the batteryn and press the power on button for 60 seconds. It still wont work....but at least the wallpaper came out briefly B4 it went black again....

HELP....I need help.....any suggestions please? I cant afford any laptop....

whats the most likeliest reason please?

Reply 1 : HELP - Vaio Black Screen!

Hi,

if the same problem persists with an external monitor, it is 100% sure that the faulty part is not the lamp or inverter! If I understand right the external monitor goes black too?

If so, it is most likely the video card that has gone bad.

This is bad for itself but the good news is that according to the specs I found under your model, you should be having a dedicated ATi Mobility Radeon X600 video card, correct?

If that's true it most likely is not soldered but just in a slot and can be easily replaced. I had the same card on my previous laptop and resold it for about 30 euros as used and that was an year ago. So you should be able to find one cheap.

However, first make sure that this is the video card you currently have and that it is not soldered. You will have to open the laptop.

Yep...same problem...screen on the external monitor remains dark - can VERY faintly see the icons while Win XP running as usual. Youd think its the Video Card eh?

Yes. Sounds like it. it is for sure NOT your screen, lamp or inverter as they have absolutely no influence over the external screen. It is most likely the video, which in your case is not too bad, as it most likely is a separate card which is easily replaceable and costs less, especially as second-hand.

Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

I just got a Samsung LN32C550 HDTV last year, and it's great, but I've been puzzling over how to adjust a particular setting. Sometimes (often) when I'm watching a movie, especially on Blu-Ray, I find that the camera movements look a little too smooth and video-y -- it has that "soap opera" effect where everything looks a little too real, and in some cases makes a simple camera movement look like a pan-and-scan video of old. I know for general brightness and color stuff, there's a "movie" setting, and that works reasonably well (as does the "natural" setting). However, that doesn't take care of the camera-motion problem. I've read a bit about anti-judder and motion-blur technology on various TVs, and it seems like the thing to do would be to turn that feature off or turn it down. Except the Samsung LN32C550 doesn't seem to have that as an option -- I can't find any settings on the "picture" menu that allow for the motion smoothness or whatever to be toned down or turned off, even on the "movie" setting. Any suggestions? I love the clarity of high-def but I also love the look of film, and I want movies to look like movies, not sports or soaps!

Reply 1 : Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

rockmarooned,

The Auto-Motion menu option is only available on 120Hz models.

What I can suggest is, to turn off some of the processing that may be causing the effect you don't like, try turning the specific inputs that you're having an issue with into "Game Mode'. This will remove some of the picture processing which may be causing this.

To do this, let's try to rename your input as a "Game" input. Using your remote, press:

Menu > Input > Edit Name > from "----" to "GAME"

Remember, each input is independent, so if that works for one input (such as HDMI-1) and you also want it on HDMI-2, then you'll do that change for HDMI-2 as well.

Reply 2 : Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

On my Samsung 55c630 I dutifully changed HDMI-1 and HDMI-2(div) to GAME, and want to return to the original settings ... which I can't remember. Help, please.

Reply 3 : Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

frankiejava,

Using your remote, press:

Menu > Input > Edit Name > (Rename back to "----") > ENTER

Does that help?

--HDTech

Reply 4 : Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

actually, no. My question is rename back to what? So I need "___" filled in.

Satellite STB? (I have Direct TV) AV Receiver? In other words I forgot the original setting.

thanks much

Reply 5 : Samsung LN32C550 - want *more* motion blur!

frankiejava,

The name of the original settings are four unnamed dashes: "----".

You could use "Satellite STB", though, or any of the settings that look better to you.

T400 making a chirping sound? Not sure why or which component is making it

As far as I can tell it is random. It just did it three times in a row with a couple seconds in between.

Before the three in a row it would only do it once every couple of hours or so. I have not noticed a pattern or anything like that.

Anyone have any idea why my T400 would be making a chirping sound? I think it is coming from the right side of the computer, not positive though.

Reply 1 : T400 making a chirping sound? Not sure why or which component is making it

I've noticed this too. It's happened after a OS reinstall and the Intel storage matrix/sata driver hasn't yet been updated. Happens at post. What version is your storage controller driver?

How would I find out what version my storage controller driver is? The chirping seems to be more frequent. I am curious as to why it is chirping.

Reply 3 : T400 making a chirping sound? Not sure why or which component is making it

In my past experiences with the T400 and even my T510, chirping and even any kinds of noises I believe are from the hard drives. Thinkpads are made very silently otherwise but the hard drives always make really silly noises. Chances are it'll be a Hitachi or something if you haven't upgraded it.

G73JH BIOS Update - Step by Step Newbie Tutorial

After following the posts in http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus...your-risk.html with interest, I got really tempted to do the update to the 209 Bios beta version.

I have never updated a Bios before, although I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable on computers, so I really went into this with a lot of trepidation. (And no, I had not been drinking )

Thankfully everything went well, and I am up and running with Bios v209.

Everything seems to be working correctly, including my keyboard lights.

This tutorial is in response to a request,

Thanks to everyone who has been of help to me in these forums, both in open threads and also through im's. I would never have had the confidence to do it without all your help.

Reply 1 : G73JH BIOS Update - Step by Step Newbie Tutorial

I must also mention that my G73JH is pretty stock, as regards to drivers. Also most of the bloatware is off, including all the Creative software, that was causing all the sound issues. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I thought I would mention it up front.

- First thing to do is download and unzip the BIOS update file (in this case, 209 Bios beta version).

Thanks to rick07, it is available at: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6271142-post92.html

- Save the Bios on a flash drive.

- Turn off keyboard lights, as well as blue bar light under screen and blue lights on the 3 buttons top left of keyboard (Is this necessary? I really have no idea, but this is exactly what I did).

- Stick the flash drive back into a USB port and restart the notebook.

- When you see the Asus splash screen, press the F2 key to enter Bios.

- In the Bios, navigate to the Advanced tab.

- In Advanced tab, select "Start Easy Flash" (should already be selected), and hit enter.

- This should bring you to the Asus Tek. Easy Flash Utility page.

Under "Current Platform" you should have your current Bios (I took this image after I had done the update).

- Navigate to the right middle pane, and select G73JhAS.209 (or whatever version you want to flash to and is on the flash drive), and hit enter.

- It will ask "Do you want to update BIOS", and give you options "Yes and No".

- Obviously, select Yes, and the update will begin, and run through to completion.

- When finished, the notebook will shut down, and you're done.

- Go ahead and restart your notebook, which should now have the new, updated Bios.

Reply 2 : G73JH BIOS Update - Step by Step Newbie Tutorial

Couple of points to note!

- I first tried to do the update with the new Bios file saved in a folder on my desktop. On entering the Easy Flash Utility, I was able to navigate to where I had the file saved, but when I clicked on it, I got an error message: "Error! Read File Failly!!"

I was able to exit the Bios, and start the notebook normally. This is when I put the file on a flash drive, and proceeded with the update as described above.

- After the update, I have noticed that the Bios > Advanced > Asus Easy Over-Clock is set to "Normal", with an option for setting it to "Turbo". I am waiting to hear whether this should be set to "Turbo", and will update this tutorial when I do. Other than that, all the other Bios settings appear to be correct.

: Please read the post from MarkS below. This means that no changes are needed in the Bios settings after the update. Thanks MarkS.

Well that's it........ quick, easy, straight forward Bios update, using the Easy Flash Utility.

Any comments and/or additions welcome.

That's the same Twin Turbo setting that the turbo button (middle button, top left) sets.

The BIOS setting will reflect the last state of the Twin Turbo mode if changed using the button. Set the Twin Turbo mode on/off from the BIOS will set the initial state when the machine boots.

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) software is the beating heart of the computer and resides inside a reprogrammable chip attached to the Motherboard. When the computer is first powered up, the BIOS software performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST), sets up the devices and controls all the hardware. Updating the BIOS can improve how the computer works. It can also make a perfectly fine computer sick, or in the worse case, dead. Updating the BIOS is not without some risk. For more information on the risk associated with updating the BIOS, please click the link in my sig and go to The Journey section and scroll down.

But the spacebar squeaks like mad. It sounds like a tiny chew toy every time I tap it.

Anyone else's doing that? Anyone know an easy fix?

Maybe you have crud/crumbs stuck underneath it? Get some compressed air and blow it out. Or call up Dell and see if they can overnight you a keyboard.

Googled and found some older posts in this same forum about the same issue.

Apparently it's fairly common with the new laptops and it stops after a few weeks of the keyboard getting broken in.

No X200 Tablet panels in the US?

Long story short, I had a 1.5 inch strip of LCD that wouldn't respond to the stylus. It was a dead zone, so I opened a service ticket. I have on-site, NBD repair, so naturally I assumed that it would be a relatively speedy repair. Come to find out that the LCD is on backorder but would arrive last Thursday. Thursday came, and it was pushed to Friday. Friday came and I was told the part was on order with no ETA and there was NOTHING that could be done to expedite the order. Today I called back, to get the same response, which I was expecting. I pressed a bit to try to speak with a manager.

I was told that there was no manager to talk to, and the only thing I could do was file a complaint. Reluctantly, I asked to file a complaint. I understand that parts are sometimes hard to find, but it was hard for me to believe that there were absolutely ZERO replacement LCD's available.

So, the next person greets me, but it wasn't the complaints department. Apparently someone had done some research and MIGHT have found an LCD in Canada that they will try to ship by Wednesday. Yay! Although, I know I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Over the course of all of my calls, I was very courteous and very civil.

My question to you guys is, is there anything I can do in the meantime to ensure I actually get the repair done in a timely manner, or am I stuck waiting until Lenovo finds a part that I could have ordered from ebay and replaced myself last week?

Thanks!

being both experienced with the parts system and knowing how certain tablet panels can become scarce, i can say with confidence that you're best waiting this one out.

lenovo (technically IBM in this case) will try several parts repositories if the warehouses in mechanicsburg, PA and armonk, NY have become depleted of a specific FRU.   canada is usually the next in line, then japan and china after that.

give it until the end of the week.   if you still haven't found satisfaction in your system's repair then please post a note on the lenovo forum so it can be tracked and (hopefully) resolved.

Thanks, Erik! I appreciate you giving me some insight on the repair process. I just had a problem with "we don't have the part and can't give you any estimate on a timeline"

I'll definitely seek assistance on the Lenovo forums if there isn't any progress by Friday.

Luckily, I have a backup tablet so I can wait.

that's a standard response when hard-to-find parts aren't in inventory.   they are looking for it... it just might have to come from a land far, far away.

x200 tablet LCD's are already hard to find? I may need to stock up on parts then, ha!

Well... yeah. Nobody's making large runs of 16:10 panels any more (that I know of), and when you consider that the X200 used PVA or AFFS panels (which were a lot more scarce to begin with) it certainly makes sense that stock is starting to dwindle some three years after production...

Even today, they still have no ETA in sight for my replacement panel. I'm confused, though. Don't the x200 and x201 use the same panel? I see all of the ebay listings advertise x200/x201.

It's a bummer that the Hydis panel is going for 400. If it were cheaper I would pick one up just because.

after a quick parts lookup on danenick1212's X200T, it looks like he has an 300-nit LED samsung super bright panel.   those are quite possibly the most rare X200T panel right now.

but, it sounds like the wheels are turning on the project and IBM should have a replacement soon.

danenick1212 - to answer your question... yes, the X200T and X201T share many panels.   for the most part everything is interchangeable.

erik,

Indeed, the wheels are turning. I received a call from the service technician this morning setting up an appointment for tomorrow morning. I will update you guys after the replacement to let you know how it went.

Thanks again, erik!

Urgent help..

Hi,

I am having a panasonic viera LED tv for which i am looking for the USB wlan adapter. Some of the website suggested me to go for netgear or panasonic wlan adapters which is very very costly. When i enquired in some fo the electronic shots, i fould d-link usb wlan adapter is available which is very cheaper..

Can anyone guide me whether i can go ahead and use that for my TV.. pls advice..

Reply 1 : Urgent help..

Its a gamble. The TV must have software to talk to a wireless USB card. It must include all the screens to set all the options for the wireless. This is getting more and more standard so in the future the answer may be yes. For now either you can buy it and try it and post your finding to a number of sites or you can hope someone else has done that.

As common as this question is maybe one many testing sites will do a article on it but I have not seen one yet.

You other option is to use the ethernet port and use a external bridge/adapter to do this. Unfortunately it may not be much cheaper to do that than buy the support USB.

The easiest and simplest solution is to use ethernet cable. The TV already has many other cables going to it for other purposes so its just a question of how hard is it to run one more

CF-52 WWAN retrofit

Hi everyone,

I am trying to field upgrade my CF-52 with a WWAN card. as I have a model cf-52gcmbvag (which should be a Mk2) I went ahead and got myself a GOBI1000 card (not the original 52GOBIFU though).

Installation was not a problem, but the card will not show up in Bios. I tried all possible settings of the 2 dip-switches (and of course the wireless switch was on and I had a SIM inserted as well).

I also found that trick of covering pin20 (underside 2nd pin after gap) before installing the card - which did not help me as well.

any idea what could be wrong?

thanks in advance

I would also like to know an answer to this question, which I asked over a YEAR ago and STILL don't know...

I tried ALL of the EXACT same things that you tried!

Reply 2 : CF-52 WWAN retrofit

When units are sold with no WWAN, Panasonic usually locks the BIOS so that even if a WWAN card is inserted, it doesn't show up in BIOS or in Windows. You'd probably need the software tools from Panasonic to enable it, unless they are already floating round the internet.

Reply 3 : CF-52 WWAN retrofit

Panasonic may be whitelisting WWAN/wifi cards where it checks your WWAN's usb vidid against supported cards and only then enables the USB port. If so, then need a hacked bios as a workaround OR isolate the WWAN card's USB pin36+38 using cellphane tape then run a shielded patch lead a a normal USB port.

Let see if it help you, on your journey. A while ago, I mean a couple of months ago I installed a gobi 1,000 to cf-19MK1 on which they say doesn't support gobi for mk1 unit. The same what is happening to you guys no show up on the bios in any setting. I made some research that this modem will only be seen on the system if you have panasonic misc driver. Fortunately my MK1 OS Xp installed by a recovery disk. So, you probably said that I've got no problem but not, I've check the utility folder if there is a misc. driver but it is absent/missing. I've checked on device manager under system and it was not there either. Instead I look for a misc driver from other model and force it to install into MK1 unit(i've forgot which model) under panasonic hotkey plus. It installed with no problem. rebbot the unit and wha..lah! it recognized the goobi. then installed the CSA packaged and work like a champ. But there is a problem my hotkey button infront doesn't function. I then go back to device manager under system then to misc. driver then update it again to its original driver which is the hotkey plus. Still the front button doesn't work. I then go back again to device manager and reinstall the hotkey driver. Reboot the system and all are works, front button and goobi 1000.

many thanks for the replies

Pinecone: I always thought that Panasonic introduced the Bios-Lock with the Mk3 version of the CF-52 (which uses the GOBI2000). But not sure there now. At least my model is "wwan ready" (i.e. has the SIM card reader installed - or do they all have that?)

nando4: if I would be running the patch to another usb port - would I "block" that usb port then with the wwan card? (I am really not sure if I am able/willing to do that anyway)

ohlip: was the card then showing up in your Bios as well or just in windows? I will check on my restore disks as well if I can find anything

[Edit]

P.S. any idea what the DIP switches should be set to if I want to use GSM/UMTS mode in europe ?

Reply 6 : CF-52 WWAN retrofit

On my system there are four dip switches. I set it up to 1=on, 2=off, 3=on and 4=off while on the original guideline from pana is on,on,off, off for HSPDA.

I can't remember exactly which models the BIOS lock is on - like you I know it's on the Gobi 2000 models, and I thought it was on the Gobi 1000 models as well...but I might be wrong. I don't do an awful lot of swapping hardware between devices The physical SIM card slot is on pretty much all models now, whether it is wwan or not - saves on manufacturing costs I'd imagine.
